Equipment & Product Safety

Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Landscaping Work

Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential for ensuring the safety of our landscaping crews, as they work with various tools and equipment in potentially hazardous environments. If you do not have this PPE and need it for a task, see your manager. We will get into safety and operation of specific equipment in Level 2. Do not use any equipment until you are properly trained. The specific PPE required may vary depending on the tasks and potential hazards involved, but here are some common PPE items for landscaping work:

  1. Head Protection:

    • Hard Hat: Protects against head injuries from falling objects, low-hanging branches, or overhead hazards.
  2. Eye and Face Protection:

    • Safety Glasses or Goggles: Guard against flying debris, dust, and chemical splashes when using equipment like mowers, trimmers, or chainsaws.
    • Face Shield: Provides additional protection for the face and eyes, especially when working with power equipment.
  3. Hearing Protection:

    • Earplugs or Earmuffs: Necessary when operating noisy equipment like leaf blowers, chainsaws, or lawn mowers.
  4. Hand Protection:

    • Gloves: Depending on the task, use gloves with appropriate features such as cut-resistant, chemical-resistant, or general-purpose gloves.
  5. Foot Protection:

    • Work Boots: Protect feet from crushing injuries and provide ankle support. Ensure they are waterproof and have good traction for various terrains.
  6. High-Visibility Clothing:

    • Reflective Vest or Shirt: Enhances visibility, especially when working near roadways or in low-light conditions.
  7. Respiratory Protection:

    • Dust Mask or Respirator: Required when working in dusty environments or when handling chemicals. Choose the appropriate type based on the specific hazards.
  8. Chemical-Resistant Clothing:

    • Coveralls or Apron: Necessary when handling pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals. Make sure it is chemical-resistant and covers the entire body.
  9. Knee Pads:

    • Protects knees when kneeling for extended periods or working on hard surfaces.
  10. Sun Protection:

    • Wide-Brimmed Hat: Shields the face and neck from the sun.
    • Sunscreen: Apply SPF-rated sunscreen to exposed skin to prevent sunburn.
  11. Insect Protection:

    • Insect-Repellent Clothing: Helps protect against ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests.
    • Tick Repellent: Apply tick repellent to exposed skin when working in areas with tick exposure.
  12. Safety Harness:

    • Required when working at heights, such as when trimming trees or working on elevated surfaces.

It's crucial to assess the specific hazards present in your landscaping tasks and provide the appropriate PPE accordingly. Regularly inspect and replace damaged or worn PPE to maintain its effectiveness in protecting workers. If you do not have questions or concerns, see your manager. Safety should always be a top priority in landscaping operations.
